摘要
대승의 불보살에게 있어서 그 동기와 목적은 중생을 구제하는 자비의 실현이다. 또한 이러한 내용은 넓은 의미의 정토를 구현하는 모든 대승경전의 동기와 목적이기도 하며, 좁은 의미의 정토교학에서도 예외는 아니다. 이는 초기불교에서 수행의 최종 목표가 열반인데 반해서 대승불교에서는 성불과 열반의 구현이 정토이다. 초기불교에서는 정각의 과정과 열반의 과정을 언급하였을 뿐 반열반 이후의 세계에 관해서 언급하지는 않았다. 하지만 대승불교에서는 제불이 성도한 이후의 세계를 자세하게 피력하고 있다. 그것이 바로 시방제불의 정토이다. 이 가운데 좁은 의미의 정토교학에서의 열반과 체득에 대해서 세 가지로 나누어 고찰해 보았다. 첫째로 극락을 장엄한 동기와 목적은, 이 사바세계에서는 고통을 소멸하기 어렵고 불과를 체득하기 어렵기 때문에 법장비구였던 아미타불이 성불하여 중생을 구제하려는 서원으로 다지고 5겁을 사유하여 조재영겁에 걸쳐서 바라밀을 성취하여 48원을 세우고 중생을 구제하기 위해서였다. 둘째로 극락세계의 구성과 그 내용들이 열반과 어떤 관계가 있는지를 검토하였다. 그 결과 아미타불이 성불하여 구현한 열반의 극락세계는 각자의 근기와 근성에 따라서, 그리고 수행의 내용과 신심의 정도에서 구품으로 분류되고, 업력의 정도와 수행하는 내용에 의해서 구분되었다. 즉, 48대원의 내용을 가지고 삼배의 구품을 설정하여 중생 각자의 수행 내용에 따라서 설정된 것이다. 이는 바로 17종의 의보장엄과 12종의 정보장엄으로 구현된 최적의 수행환경이면서 열반의 세계였다. 셋째로 극락에서의 열반과 체득은 아미타불에 의해서 설정된 극락의 구조물들은 모두가 아미타불의 법계신으로서 최상의 수행환경에서 그곳의 무정물과 유정물로부터 진리의 가르침을 들으면 곧바로 열반을 체득하는 것이다. 이것이 가능하려면 확고하고 절실한 믿음을 바탕으로 왕생발원하고 염불삼매를 수행함으로 인해서 견불하고 그 믿음이 흔들리지 않으면 곧바로 왕생한다. 그리고 왕생한 이후 계위는 곧바로 불퇴전의 경지에 오르고 열반의 세계가 구현된 환경에서 법계를 몸으로 삼은 아미타불의 광명에 섭취되고 자연의 소리인 모든 법음을 듣고 기쁨을 얻어 몸과 마음이 청정해져서 삼법인을 증득하여 구경에 일생보처에 올라 열반을 체득한다는 경지에 대해서 논해보았다.
