본 논문에서는 『섭대승론석』(이하 『섭론석』)의 乘의 세 가지 의미와 『불성론』의 3종불성설을 매개로 하여 성립한 吉藏의 3種佛性說을 검토하는 것이다. 길장의 3종불성설은 『인왕반야경소』와 『금광명경소』에서 발견되는데, 모두 『섭론석』․『불성론』과 깊은 관련성이 있음을 확인할 수 있다. 따라서 두 논서의 譯者로 알려진 眞諦(Paramarthā)의 영향을 받은 측면이 있다. 나아가 길장이 『인왕반야경』과 같은 반야경에서의 3종불성설을 밝히고, 『십이문론』에도 불성이 설해져 있다고 주장하는 것은, 반야사상과 불성사상을 융합하는 모습이라고 할 수 있다. 본 논문은 길장의 중도불성설 이외의 불성설과 진제와의 연관성에 관심을 두고 연구하던 중, 『인왕반야경소』를 중심으로 한 소관양자의 글을 접하고 난 뒤에 나오게 되었다. 따라서 소관양자의 설을 전면적으로 검토하면서, 적은 지면에서 소화하지 못했던 내용을 상세하게 보완하였다. 이 과정에서 길장의 3종불성설을 해설할 때, 언급되는 인용문헌을 검토한 결과 진제와의 관련성을 넘어 세친에 주목하는 모습을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 길장의 3종불성설이 『섭론석』 등의 영향을 받아서 성립한 것이기는 하지만, 3종불성설을 해석하는데 있어서 길장이 반야중관사상을 근간으로 하여 불성을 융회하고자 함이 엿보인다고 생각한다. 길장에게 있어서 반야중관 계통이 아닌 초기유식학 문헌의 영향에 의해서 3종불성설이 성립했다는 것은 중국 삼론학의 관점에서 주목할만한 부분이라고 생각한다. 나아가 길장이 一乘과 佛性을 접목한 一乘佛性설을 전개하는데 있어서, 승의 세 가지 의미와 관련된 3種佛性說은 중요한 기반을 제공하였다고 생각한다. 현재로서는 이러한 불성론은 삼론학 내부의 전통적인 견해라기보다는 길장의 독창적 해석이었다고 추정된다.
This article purports to investigate the establishment of Jizang’s theory of three types of Buddha nature on the basis of the three meanings of “yāna” in the Commentary on the Mahāyāna Compendium (Mahāyāna-saṃgrahôpanibandhana, 攝大乘論釋) and the theory of three types of Buddha nature in the Treatise on Buddha Nature (Buddha-dhātu-śāstra, 佛性論). Jizang’s theory of three types of Buddha nature is found in the Commentary on the Benevolent King Sutra (仁王般若經疏, Inwang banya gyeong so) and the Commentary on the Golden Light Sutra (金光明經疏, Geumgwangmyeong gyeong so), both of which are ascertained to have been so significantly connected with the Commentary on the Mahāyāna Compendium and the Treatise on Buddha Nature that the influence of Paramarthā known as the translator of both commentarial works on them seems obvious. Jizang’s theory in them is considered to have been derived from his original interpretation rather than from the traditional perspective within the Sanlun school. In such a process, Jizang asserts that the theory of three types of Buddha nature is indicated in the Prajñāpāramitā sutras such as the Benevolent King Sutra, suggesting the appearance of Buddha nature even in the Dvādaśamukha-Śāstra (十二門論), which makes clear the immanence of the theory of Buddha nature even in the thought of the Prajñāpāramitā and Mādhyamika tradition. Therefore, while Jizang’s theory of three types of Buddha nature has been established under the influence of Paramarthā’s Commentary on the Mahāyāna Compendium, his explanation of the theory of the three types of Buddha nature suggests that he is still on the basis of the thought of the Prajñāpāramitā and Mādhyamika tradition. It is very significant that Jizang established his theory of the three types of Buddha nature in connection with yāna under influence from various texts. Especially, Jizang’s establishment of his own original theory of the ekayāna Buddha nature (一乘佛性) was made possible through the reception of the significance of the meaning of yāna and the theory of the three types of Buddha nature.
