摘要
본 고찰은 근대기 범어사 및 선학원 역사에서 간과할 수 없는 승려인 오성월의 생애를 조명하면서, 그의 삶에 나타난 선과 민족의식을 조명하는 글이다. 오성월은 범어사, 선학원 역사에서 중요한 활동, 위상을 점하였음에도 불구하고 지금껏 그에 대한 객관적, 학문적인 접근은 부재하였다. 그래서 본고에서는 문헌 자료에 의거하여 그의 삶을 복권시키고자 하였다. 오성월은 1910년대 범어사의 다수의 선원을 개설하여 범어사가 선찰대본산이라는 사격, 정체성을 갖게 한 주역이었다. 그리고 그는 범어사 금강계단을 개설하기도 하였다. 나아가가서 그는 임제종운동에 관여하면서 1920년대 초기에는 선학원의 창설, 수좌들의 조직체인 선우공제회의 창설에도 주도적으로 참여하였다. 이런 그의 활동은 1935년 이후 재단법인 조선불교선리참구원의 이사, 이사장으로 이어졌다. 그리고 그는 조선불교 선종의 종무원장을 역임하였다. 이와 같은 그의 선사로서의 활동은 그의 삶의 근간이 되었다. 그러면서도 그는 민족의식을 겸비한 선각자이었다. 그는 범어사 선원에 민족의식을 반영케 하였는데, 이런 점이 그가 3.1운동 후원, 상해 임시정부에 군자금 전달, 승려 독립선언서에 서명할 수 있는 요인이 되었다. 본 고찰에서는 그의 선에 대한 문제, 민족운동을 중점적으로 살펴보았지만 추후에는 그가 개설한 범어사 계단 문제와 그가 해방 이후에는 크게 조명을 받지 못하였던 문제 등을 더욱 천착할 필요성이 제기된다.
This consideration is writing illuminating Seon and National Consciousness Reflecting on his Life as illuminating a buddhist monk Oh Sung-wol's Life not passing over at history of Bumeo-sa and Seonhakwon in modern age. There is no academic approach so far about him although Oh Sung-wol occupied his important activity and statues in the history of Bumeo-sa and Seonhakwon. Therefore I tried to rehabilitate his life on the basis of the literature materials. Oh Sung-wol was leading role letting Bumeo-sa got monastery class as Seonchaldaebonsan(main meditative monastery) and its identity in opening a couple of Seon houses(meditation retreat houses)in Bumeo-sa zone in nineteen tens. And he established Bumeo-sa Gumganggyedan(Diamond Ordination Altar). Further more he was involved in Imje Order movement and took part in foundation of Seonwoo(meditation friend)society which was organic body for Seonhakwon and Sujwa(head sitting, meditation monk) as an initiator in nineteen twenties. In his such activity was connected to director, chief director of Joseon(Korea) Seon theory concentration foundation since 1935. And he served chief director of religious administration of Seon order of the Joseon(Korean) Buddhism. Such as Seon monk his activity became the basis of his life. Besides he was a pioneer having both national consciousness. As he reflect national consciousness on Bumeo-sa Seon house, such points for example 3.1 Movement support, military funds delivery for the Sanghai interim government and became main dominant to make signature on the Declaration of Independent by monks. In this consideration I reviewed the matter about his view on Seon and national movement in priority, but later on the necessity of scrutinizing the ordination altar where he established in Bumeo-sa and the matters what have not been illuminated greatly is brought up more.
