This paper examines the historical importance of Buddhist temples in North Korea ranging from ancient to modern times. During the Goguryeo Dynasty, the kingdom's capital was transferred to Pyeongyang and most temples from the Goguryeo Dynasty were built after this event. Temples such as, Yongmyongsa and Chongrungsa date back to this time and both have relations to Ju-mong, the founder of Goguryeo. Among the "Nine Mountain Monasteries," Kwangjosa of the late Shilla Dynasty, located in Mount Sumi of Haeju, is the northernmost sited. Temples, such as, Kaesima was founded under Palhae Kingdom. Wang Geon, the founder and the great emperor of the Goryeo Dynasty, established BeobWang-Sa, WangRyun-Sa, etc. which have become the top 10 Buddhist Temples. Bongeunsa and Bulilsa are memorial temples that were controlled by the royal families. Head temples of denominations mainly operated in Gaegyeong, the capital of Goryeo. For geographical reasons, Chunghungsa, Pohyonsa, and Singwangsa in Haeju were strengthened for national defense. Among the 36 Zen and Non-zen Buddhist temples of the Chosun Dynasty, Yeon-Bok Sa (zen) and Gwangmyeongsa (non-zen) served as government offices. Moreover, Gwaneum cave and Gamrosa in Kaesong, Yongmyongsa in Pyongyang, and Sogwangsa in Anbyŏn, all acted as the royal and main temples of Gaegeyong, and Suryuksa of South Korea. In the late Choson period, Sogwangsa served as one of the four main temples supporting the emperor. In 1902, Yujomsa, Sogwangsa, Kwijusa, Pohyonsa, Singwangsa belonged to the 16 provincial temples. Later, 31 head temple system emerged during the Japanese Ruling Era and among them 8 were main temples. Total of 403 temples were operated where most of them were located in Mount Kumgang and Mount Myohyang and served as temples for Dangun or the royal families.
