摘要
본 고찰은 대흥사 승려로 독립운동에 매진한 박영희의 독립운동을 민족불교의 관점에서 정리한 글이다. 박영희의 삶과 독립운동에 대해서는 그간 학문적으로 주목하지 않았다. 그래서 필자는 그의 삶에서 가장 중요하다고 이해되는 그의 독립운동을 실사구시적으로 정리하고자 하였다. 이런 측면에서 이 글에서는 박영희의 항일 의병전쟁의 참가, 대흥사로 출가, 3.1운동 참가, 만주 신흥무관학교 입교, 국내로 귀국, 한용운을 당수로 하였던 만당의 참여 등으로 나누어 그의 행보를 살펴보았다. 박영희는 독립운동에 매진하면서도 불교 근대화를 추진하겠다는 의도로 신식학교에서 수학하였다. 즉 그는 중앙학림, 중앙불전에서 수학하여 불교와 근대문명을 배웠다. 때문에 그가 불교근대화를 염두에 두면서도 불교 민족운동에 참가한 이념은 민족불교론이었다. 민족불교론은 불교의 보편성을 띠면서도 근대불교에 부여된 역사적 사명(독립운동)을 구현한 논리 및 지성이었다. 한편 이 논고는 박영희의 일제 말기의 일부 행적으로 그를 ‘친일파’로 매도한 기존의 감성적인 글에 대한 비판의 성격을 갖는다. 이 글이 박영희와 불교 독립운동의 재인식에 참고가 되길 기대한다.
This is the study for the independent movement by Park Yeonghee, a monk of Daeheung Monastery, in the point of view of ethic Buddhism. There are few academic researches on Park Yeonghee's life and his independent movement. So I'd like to make it in detail for his independent movement, the most significant event in his life. In this aspect, I looked over his footsteps, the participation in the war of army with justice against Japan, joining the priesthood of Daeheung Monastery, the participation in the 3.1 movement, entering Shinheung Mugwan School at Manjoo, Coming back to home land, and the participation in the Mandang society, where the chief was Han Yongwoon, etcetera. Park Yeonghee studied at the newly established school with the intention to develop the independent movement and promote Buddhism's modernization. He also learnt Buddhism and modern civilization at Jung'ang Hakrim, Jung'ang Buljeon. What he always concerned on was the modernization of Buddhism and the theory of ethic Buddhism which let him participate in Buddhist ethnic movement. The theory of ethnic Buddhism had the universality of Buddhism, the logic and intelligence realizing the historical mission (Independent movement) given to modern Buddhism. Meanwhile, this paper criticized for the existing emotional writings which denounced him as 'pro-Japanese' owing to some acts of Park Yeonghee in the end of Japanese imperialism. I look forward to having this research for re-acknowledgement of Park Yeonghee and Buddhist independent movement.
