본 고찰은 근대 고승인 백용성의 법제자인 변월주의 불교정화에 대한 글이다. 지금껏 변월주에 대한 연구는 최근에 시작되었지만, 그에 대해서는 연구할 분야가 많다. 그래서 본 고찰에서는 그의 불교정화관의 내용과 성격을 정리하였다. 그런데 그의 주장은 그가 소속된 태고종의 성격, 진로와 연관이 된다. 때문에 그의 불교정화관과 태고종의 불교정화에 대한 입장은 여러 측면에서 고찰할 대상이 많다. 이와 같은 전제에서 본 고찰에서는 다음의 측면을 유의하였다. 첫째, 변월주는 백용성 제자이었는데, 그는 백용성의 정화사상을 어떻게 인식하였는가이다. 둘째, 변월주는 정화운동이 일어났을 때에 어떤 활동을 하였는가이다. 셋째, 변월주는 그가 해인사에 있을 때에 시작된 불교정화운동을 어떻게 인식하였는가이다. 넷째, 변월주는 그가 속한 태고종단에서 불교정화를 주장하였다. 그런데 그의 주장은 태고종단에서 수용되었는가에 대한 문제가 있다. 다섯째, 변월주와 유사한 생각을 갖고 있었던 황성기(동국대 교수)의 불교정화관과의 비교를 고려할 수 있다. 이 고찰이 변월주의 생애와 사상을 새롭게 이해하는 자극제가 되길 기대한다. 그리고 태고종단의 불교정화, 불교혁신 등에 대한 연구가 촉발되길 바란다. 그래서 불교정화에 대한 새로운 연구가 시작되길 기대한다.
This report is about Byeon-Wolju(변월주) of the Buddhist purification of the Mayor, the Buddhist monk of Baek-yeongseon(백용성), the modern high priest. So far, the study on the variation of the moon has begun recently, and there are many fields to study about it. In this study, I summarized the contents and character of his Buddhist purification house. His argument, however, is related to the character and career of his native species. Therefore, his Buddhist purification pavilion and the position of Buddhist purification of the Taego order are many to be considered in various aspects. In this study, the following aspects were noted. First, he was a disciple of Baek-YongSung, and how he perceived YongSeong's purification idea. Second, what was the activity of the Maynyeol when the purification movement occurred. Third, it is how he perceived the Buddhist purification movement that began when he was in Haeinsa Temple. Fourth, the Mayor insisted on the purification of Buddhism in the exotic Taego order to which he belonged. However, there is a question of whether his argument was accepted in the antichrist. Fifth, it can be considered a comparison with the Buddhist purgatory of Hwang-Sungki (Professor of Dongguk University), who had a similar idea to that of Changwonju. I hope that this review will become a stimulant for a new understanding of the life and thought of the Alluvial period. It is hoped that research on Buddhist purification of Buddhism and Buddhist reform of Taego order will be sparked. So I hope to start a new study on Buddhist purification.
