摘要
『벽암록』에는 조주의 “지도무난 유혐간택(至道無難 唯嫌簡擇)”과 관련된 공안이 4칙 들어 있다. 제2칙, 제57칙, 제58칙, 제59칙이다. 모두 “지도무난 유혐간택” 즉 “지극한 도는 어렵지 않으니 오직 간택을 꺼릴 뿐이다”로 시작되는데, 제2칙은 조주의 말로 되어 있고, 다른 3개의 본칙은 한 승려의 말로 되어 있다. 조주는 승려와 나누는 문답을 통해 사구(死句)로 시작된 이 화두를 활구(活句)로 드러내고 있다. 제2칙에서는 “명백에 머물지 않거늘 무엇을 소중히 간직합니까?”, 제57칙에서는 “어떠한 것이 간택하지 않는 것입니까?”, 제58칙에서는 “당시 사람이 이 말에 둥지를 틀고 있는 것은 아닙니까?”, 제59본칙에서는 “말을 하자마자 이는 간택입니다. 스님은 어떻게 사람들을 위하겠습니까?” 하는 승려의 질문에 대해 각각 “나도 알지 못한다”(제2칙), “천상천하 유아독존”(제57칙), “‘지도무난 유혐간택’을 말할 때마다 분간해서 말한 적이 없다”(제58칙), “지도무난 유혐간택”(제59칙)이라고 대답함으로써 조주는 “지도무난 유혐간택”을 사구에서 활구로 전환시키고 있다. 우리들은 사구를 활구로 드러나게 하는, 조주와 승려 간의 문답을 읽어 가는 동안 단순히 이해하는 데 그치고 있었던 “극도무난 유혐간택”이 간택(簡擇)과 지도(至道)의 상대적 관계를 나타내면서도 이 말 자체가 무의미의 활구로서 이러한 상대적 관계를 초월해 있다는 것을 깨닫게 되는 증득의 길로 인도된다.
In the Red Cliff Record[碧岩錄] we can see four Gongans related to Joju's teaching as to the aphorism “The supreme Way is without difficulty, just avoid discrimination”. These Gongans are based on the 2th case[本則], the 57 case, the 58 case, and the 59 case. All these Gongans begin with mentioning “The supreme Way is without difficulty, just avoid discrimination”. The monks' questions are “Since you are not in clarity, what do you preserve?” in the 2th Case, “Since you don't know, why then do you say you are not in clarity” in the 57th, “What is not discriminating?” in the 58th, and “As soon as there are words spoken, this is discrimination. So how do you help people?” in the 59th. Joju's answers are “Even I don't know”(2th), “In the whole universe I alone am the honored one”(57th), “Once someone asked me, and I simply couldn't explain for five years”(58th), “It's just this: The supreme Way has no difficuties. Just avoid discrimination”(59th). By answering the monks' questions respectively, Josu is turning “The supreme Way is without difficulty. Just avoid discrimination” as a dead phrase [死句] into that as a living phrase[活句] While we're reading the question and answer between Joju and a monk, the aphorism “The supreme Way is without difficulty, just avoid discrimination” which we just understand through our intelligence at once represents the negativity-based relationships between discrimination and the supreme Way and transcends them revealing itself as the living phrase of nonsense, in the course of which we ends up being immediately led to attaining the Enlightenment
