인간은 다양한 개성과 근기를 가진 존재이다. 교육면에 있어 인간이 다양한 만큼 그에 따른 교육법도 다양성이 필요하다. 부처님께서 제자들의 근기에 따라 진리를 설했듯이 선사들도 제자들의 교육적 수준이나 근기에 따라 지도하였다. 당대(唐代)에 승려들이 깨달은 스승들을 찾아다니는 발초첨풍(撥草瞻風)의 시대이기도 하지만, 스승 입장에서 제자가 자신과 연(緣)이 맞지 않는다고 생각하면 자신의 제자를 다른 선사에게 보내는 대기대용(大機大用)의 교육자들이었다. 마조도일(馬祖道一)은 석두희천(石頭希遷)에게 제자를 보내었고, 석두도 자신과 연이 맞지 않은 제자는 마조에게 보내어 제자를 깨우치게 하는데 역점을 두었다. 또한 마조는 경산법흠(徑山法欽)이나 남양혜충(南陽慧忠)에게 제자를 보내기도 하였다. 한편 마조는 제자들을 지도할 때, 똑 같은 질문에도 일괄적이고 교조적인 답변이 없이 그때마다 제자의 근기, 시기, 장소에 맞추어 지도하는 수시설법(隨時說法)의 선사였다. 마조의 이런 제자 교육법은 후대에 공안으로 발전하였다.
Human is a creature with diverse characteristics and patience. In the aspect of education, there needs diversity in education as there are diverse human beings. Like Buddha preached his teaching according to the perseverance of disciples, Buddhist priests also supervised according to the educational level or perseverance of disciples. The Tang age was a period of selection that priests seek enlightened masters but at the same time, if the master regarded the disciple is not compatible with him, the master sent his disciple to another Buddhist priest. Majo sent his disciples to Seokdu while Seokdu also sent disciples who are not compatible with him to Majo and focused on enlightening disciples. On the other hand, Majo sent his disciples to Gyeongsanbeophem or Namyanghyechung as well. When supervising disciples, Majo was a priest who gave disengaged preaching to a same question without standardized answer depending perseverance, time and place of the disciple. Priest in contemporary period deplore that there is no great master in this period.
