무학자초(無學自超)의 「불조종파지도(佛祖宗派之圖)」 작성목적과 의미Ⅰ - 라옹(懶翁)의 사법(嗣法)과 중심 법맥(法脈)에 대한 검토=Creating Purpose and Meaning I of Muhag Jacho's “Buljo Jongpajido” - A Study on the Buddhist Sects focusing on the Method and the Principle of the Method
The masters under whom Naong(懶翁) had studied were Jigong(指空) and Pyeongsan(平山). By the way, Jacho, a disciple of Naong, just presented the structure centering on Pyeongsan rather than Jigong in the precess to write < Buljo Jongpajido >. In order to examine the validity of Jacho's assertion in < Buljo Jongpajido >, this paper examines whose teaching Naong was following, Jigong or Pyeongsan? For this, the purpose of Naong's studying in Yuan was first examined, and then the situation in which he succeed the legal tradition. What can be confirmed through this is that Naong dared to travel to Yuan to learn from Jigong and that he was affected by Jigong more than Pyeongsan. Also, as a result of ten years long study in China, Naong built a strong relationship with Jigong. Because of this, Jigong recognized Naong as his disciple, and Naong also recorded the influence of Jigong. This is an aspect that is not confirmed in the relationship between Naong and Pyeongsan. In 1370, Naong was greatly highlighted when Jigong's holy bones were conveyed to Goryeo, along with a growing national memorial fever toward Jigong. This was the background for Naong to be appointed as the royal master and the leader of Buddhism by King Gongmin. Since then, Naong rebuilt the Hoeamsa Temple greatly based on the Jigong's prophecy. In other words, Naong was not a Pyeongsan's disciple but a successor of Jigong who had been more closely related to him.
