This paper examines the process in which Buddhist literatures were imported from Japan into China, and large volume Buddhist texts such as Buddhist dictionaries or Tripitaka were published. In 1868, Yang Wenhui (楊文會), who led the publication of Buddhist texts, established Jinling Buddhist Publishing House (金陵刻經處) in Nanjing, and started exchange with the Japanese monk, Nanjo Bunyu (南條文雄). Through this exchange, he imported many compilations of Chinese texts that have disappeared from China. These texts that were imported back into China made an enormous impact on the development of Chinese Buddhism. Furthermore, Yang Wenhui participated in the project of collecting and publishing Manji Tripitaka Sequel (卍續藏經) that was conducted in Japan and delivered Buddhist texts from Ming and Qing Dynasties to Japan. During this period in China, new Tripitaka were published based on the Tripitaka imported from Japan, and the newly discovered Tripitaka from Song and Yuan Dynasties were reproduced in facsimile. Also, in the 1920s, Ding Fubao (丁福保) published the Dictionary of Buddhist Studies (佛學大辭典) by referring to the modern Buddhist dictionaries that were published in Japan. Ding’s dictionary later came to be utilized as an immensely important reference book. As such, publication of modern Chinese scriptures not only shows symbolically the modernization of Chinese Buddhism, but also that the process was not an isolated event in China, but one that unfolded in a manner of international exchange with Japan, etc.
