According to Buddha, self (atta) is derived from the attachment to the five aggregates (pancakkhandh.) which make up the empirical world. Buddha insists that one could not escape from the state of suffering as long as one considers the five aggregates as self. Buddha갽s non-self theory takes the purpose of overcoming suffering by making conscious of the fact that there is nothing to be called as self. The meditation taught by Buddha is also the means to reach the state of freedom from suffering through the realization of non-self. Psychiatrist Mark Epstein points out that Narcissism makes human fall into suffering. Narcissism also causes one to forget the fact that self is flexible and does not have substantiality. The practice of the Four Noble Truths (catt.ri-ariyasacc.ni) which Buddha taught can be an effective way to heal the suffering from narcissism. At the similar view point with Mark Epstein, Owen Flanagan also referred to accepting the truth of non-self as the road to happiness. Eckhart Tolle also emphasizes that one has to stay at present moment to get rid of the notion of self in order to stay free. Non-self-theory seems to be a contradictory concept with self in psychiatry. But Psychiatrist also argues that self which they are saying is probably temporary and relative, and one should not cling to self not to feel suffering. Therefore, it can be said that these two theories could interact with each other. I found out that non-self theory and the self have a common purpose to escape from the unhealthy state, and have the similar principles which can be used for healing.
