반야신앙의 전승과 유포에 대한 일고찰 -한역 반야경전을 중심으로-=A Study on the Transmission and Circulation of the Prajna Faith: Around the Prajna Scriptures Translated Into Classical Chinese
대승경전 가운데 법화경은 강력하고 다양한 신앙의 체계를 갖춘 법화신앙을 만들어냈고, 정토경은 아미타불이 있는 서방정토에 극락왕생하게 하는 정토신앙으로 대중화되었음은 일반적으로 널리 알려져 있다. 본고는 법화신앙과 정토신앙과 같이 동아시아 불교에서 반야경을 중심으로 반야신앙이 형성되고 유포될 수 있었는지를 검토하고자 한 것이다. 그러기 위해서 반야경의 내용에서 신앙적 요소가 있는지 검토하고, 한역된 이후 동아시아 불교에서 신앙의 형태로 전개될 수 있는 요소를 반야경전을 중심으로 살펴보았다. 이를 위해서 세 가지 측면에서 동아시아 불교에 있어서 반야신앙의 성립의 요건들을 조망하였다. 먼저 반야경전에서 핵심적으로 설명되는 반야바라밀이 신앙적 요소로 쓰여졌는지 분석하였다. 이 속에서 반야바라밀이 반야경전을 대신하여 쓰여진 경우와 현실적 이익과 공덕을 얻는 대신주로 설명될 경우에, 신앙적 성격이 두드러짐을 알 수 있었다. 다음은 반야경전 자체를 존숭하여 서사하고 수지독송하는 형태에서 신앙적 측면을 찾을 수 있었는데, 이는 『마하반야초경(摩訶般若초經)』의 성립과 연관성이 있다. 원본인 『도행반야경』과 비교할 때 『마하반야초경』은 경전을 서사하고 수지독송하는 복덕이 많음을 밝히는 내용으로 편집됨을 확인할 수 있다. 마지막으로 반야바라밀이 현세적 이익을 얻는 대신주로서 수용되는 것이 신앙적 면모와 많은 관계를 갖고 있다고 보기 때문에, 이러한 대표적 모습을 보이는 『반야심경』을 중심으로 여러 가지 역사적 전거들을 검토해보았다. 이처럼 반야경의 신앙적 요소를 밝히고 그것이 동아시아 불교에서 전승되고 유포되는 상황을 확인하여, 반야신앙이 전개될 요소가 있었음을 파악할 수 있었다. 반야신앙은 경전 내용에 근거하여 경전의 서사와 수지독송을 통해서 전승되는 측면과 『반야심경』의 경우 경전 자체가 다라니로 신앙되고 있었음을 고찰할 수 있었다.
This article purports to investigate if there has been the formation of the faith in Prajna within East Asian Buddhism as the faith in the Lotus Sutra or in the Pure Land. To do so, it examines if there are elements of faith in the content of the Prajna Sutras, searching for the elements with the potentiality to develop into the form of faith in East Asian Buddhism since the translation of the Sutras into Classical Chinese. In doing the above examination, this article surveys the requirements for the construction of the Prajna faith within East Asian Buddhism through the following three aspects. Firstly, it analyzes if the term of Prajnaparamita, which is explained as the essential concept in the Prajna Sutras, has been used as an element of faith. By this analyzation, in the case of the usage of Prajnaparamita to represent the Prajna Sutras or in the case of the explanation of it as being a greatly mysterious and magical word for this worldly gain and merit, its characteristic of faith is confirmed. Next, its characteristic of faith could be found in the manner of revering, copying, holding dear, and reciting the Prajna Sutras for themselves, which is ascertained to have been closely related to the composition of the Mohebanruochaojing (摩訶般若초經). Lastly, in the context of the premise that the appropriation of Prajnaparamita as a greatly mysterious and magical word for this worldly gain is connected deeply with the dimension of faith, various textual sources around the Heart Sutra (般若心經) have been investigated through historical facts. Thus, the existence of the elements for the development of faith in Prajna could be confirmed by the clarification of the elements of faith in the Prajna Sutras and the examination of the representative situation of its development in East Asian Buddhism. Above all, the faith in Prajna could be ascertained in the aspect of its transmission through copying, holding dear, and reciting Scriptures, in addition to the situation of a scripture becoming the object of faith by itself as a dharani (陀羅尼) as in the case of the Heart Sutra.
