초기 대승경전에서는 보편적으로 이전 부파불교의 성문승에 대한 비판을 전제로 한다. 반면 『법화경』은 성문과 연각승을 포용하는 측면에서 설하고 있다. 『법화경』은 중생을 제도하기 위해 삼승방편을 시설하지만, 일승을 지향하는 가르침이다[三乘方便 一乘眞實]. 이 일승을 경전에서는 諸法實相이라고 하였는데, 이는 언어와 사량 분별을 떠난 경지로 부처와 조사가 깨달은 세계를 의미한다. 한편 이 일승은 모든 중생이 성불할 수 있는 근기[作佛]를 가지고 있다는 사상이다. 또한 일승과 관련해 ‘모든 중생이 나와 더불어 다름없이 평등한 불성’임을 알리고, 이 성문을 비롯한 모든 중생이 미래세에 부처되기를 바라는 誓願이 담겨 있다. 미래세에 성불할 것이라는 예언은 授記 사상으로 드러나 있다. 이와 같은 일승을 근간으로 드러난 作佛 사상은 후대 중국 선사들의 사상 확립에 영향을 미쳤으며, 선종 확립에 토대가 되었다.
In the early Mahayana sutras, there generally based on the criticisms on the Shravaka, the Disciple-vehicle, of previous multifold schools of Buddhism. On the other hand, the Lotus sutra says in the part of embracing the Shravaka and Pratyeka-buddha. The Lotus sutra mentions the expedient of three vehicles to save sentient beings though, it is the teaching aiming at the One-vehicle[三乘方便 一乘眞實]. In the sutra, it is called, 諸法實相, for the One-vehicle, as the level which left from language and all the discernments, it means the world where Buddha and spiritual patriarchs gained the enlightenment. Meanwhile, this One-vehicle is the thought that all of the sentient beings have abilities [作佛] to attain Buddhahood. Also, it holds the wish all the sentient beings to be Buddhas in the future including the Shravaka and to let them know, ‘all the sentient beings have equal Buddhahood, not different from me’, related to the One-vehicle. The prediction which the Shravaka can attain Buddhahood is shown as the thought of 授記, receiving a prediction of enlightenment. The thought of 作佛 which is shown, based on such the One-vehicle, gave an influence on the establishment of thoughts of Chinese Seon masters in the later time, and became a foundation of establishment of the Dhyana School.
