There are various views about the background and rationale of Won-gwang’s Five Secular Sīlas which Won-gwang gave to the two youth of Silla dynasty “as one precept to which they could devote their lives.” The Sīlas became an influential guide that the people of Silla followed in their daily lives. Some argue that these Sīlas are rooted in Confucianism, and the others insist that these are based on ethical practices of Mahāyana Buddhism. Several researchers emphasize that these are results of fusion: Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism. Lastly, a few researchers attempt to connect them to unique traditional ideas of ancient Korea. Examining these various views, this paper tries to seek the relevance of Five Secular Sīlas to Early Buddhism. In Early Buddhist scriptures, there are teachings that might be useful in solving the problems of individual or social levels, and that also have similar format to Won-gwang’s Five Secular Sīlas. Based on these facts, this paper proposes new assertion that these Five Secular Sīlas can be traced back to Early Buddhism. This new assertion is supported by the literatures which convey that Won-gwang studied Early Buddhism when he went to China.
