摘要
Lorsqu'on examine les sources anciennes qui pourraient nous renseigner sur les débuts du culte rendu à Avalokitesvara, nous sommes vite conduits à nous poser des questions fondamentales portant sur le culte des Bodhisattva dits "Célestes". Les travaux récents sur les traductions chinoises anciennes des textes bouddhiques indiens nos sources datables les plus anciennes au sujet du Mahāyāna mettent l'accent sur la notion de "Bodhisattva-Célestes" présente au commencement du mouvement. Toutefois, les historiens de l'art ont pour un temps essayé de situer les débuts du culte rendu à la statue/l'image d'Avalokitesvara (et autres Bodhisattva) dans la région dite du "Grand Gandhara", lieu de provenance supposé de la plupart sinon de l'ensemble des textes bouddhiques ayant servi de base aux premières traductions chinoises. L'auteur porte ici son analyse sur les données textuelles les plus anciennes concernant Avalokitesvara qu'il étudie à l'aune des représentations plastiques, puisque l'époque et le lieu où la présence effective du Mahāyāna dans le sub-continent indien est attestée constitue, dans les faits, un enjeu de taille.
Recent work on the early Chinese Buddhist translations, our earliest datable sources for the Mahāyāna, has problematized the notion of the celestial bodhisattva in the earliest phase of this movement. However, art historians have for some time sought to locate the beginnings of an image cult dedicated to Avalokiteśvara (and other bodhisattvas) in the area of Greater Gandhāra, the postulated source for many if not most of our earliest Chinese Buddhist translations. This paper aims to consider if in fact the earliest Mahāyāna literary data for Avalokiteśvara is consistent with the evidence of the earliest plastic media, since the date and location of the first public presence of the Mahāyāna on the Indian subcontinent are very much at stake.
