摘要
이 논문은 초기불교의 빨리 경전에 대한 우리말 번역의 현재적 양상 과과제를다룬것이다. 이논문에는과거중국에서있었던경전번역의 사례 등에 기초하여 현재의 번역 작업에서 노출되는 여러 문제점에 대 한개선방안이제시되어있다. 이들을열거하면다음과같다. 1번역 의목표를분명히하고서작업에임할것, 2번역어의선정및통일성 을이루기위한논의구조를확립할것, 3번역비평및번역론에관련한 논의를 활성화할 것, 4 아비담마의 주석서와 해설서를 충분히 참고할 것, 5번역된모든성과물에색인집혹은용례집을포함시킬것, 6번 역된 성과물에 PTS 교열본의 페이지 숫자를 삽입.기재할 것, 7 기존 의번역사례및선행연구를충분히반영하도록할것등이다. 필자는이 러한 방안에는 집단적인 논의와 동의의 절차가 필요하다는 언급을 덧붙 였다. 중국에서의경전번역사례를통해알수있듯이, 훌륭한번역에 는 훌륭한 번역자만이 아니라 그들을 뒷받침해주는 훌륭한 번역 시스템 과 논의의 절차가 있었다. 우리는 이제부터라도 번역자 개개인의 능력 과 자질 못지않게 이러한 시스템적 차원에서의 뒷받침이 요구된다는 사실을 인정해야 한다. 경전의 번역이란 번역자 개인의 역량 차원을 넘어 선 것으로, 이질적인 문화적.학문적 공간들 간의 교섭이라고 할 수 있 다. 이러한인식이전제될때우리는번역자개인의한정된시각을넘어 경전이 지닌 본래의 의미에 보다 온전하게 다가갈 수 있을 것이다.
The present article deals with the appearances and the tasks of the present korean translations on the Pāli Buddhist Scriptures. I make some proposals for the solution to the problems which have been come out from these present translations. My proposals are generally based on the precedents of chinese translations on the Sanskrit Buddhist Scriptures. These are as follows: 1 We must start to translate the Pāli Buddhist Scriptures with an apparent purpose: for whom we translate them. 2 We need to establish the discussion system to talk over the right selection of the terminology. 3 There must be active discussions on the translation criticism and the translation theory. 4 Every translator has to fairly refer to the Abhidhamma literatures translating the Scriptures. 5 The index should be entried on the products of translation in an appropriate manner. 6 The page numbers of PTS revisions are correctly put in the products of translation. 7 Every translator has to refer to the precedents of translations and studies and to reflects on his own translations. And I made additional remarks that these proposals need to pass through the public discussions and gain the agreements of the majority. I think good translations need good translation systems, which could support good translators. This means that the task of translation demands open discussions beyond the personal abilities and qualities of the translators. I think our attitudes on the translation of Scriptures will be changed when we accept this fact. Also it can lead to a better atmosphere for the improved korean translation on the Pāli Buddhist Scriptures.
