摘要
필자는 초기불교 당시 유통된 무아설의 유형을 3가지 부류의 12가지로 파악한다. 선행 논문인 『초기불교 무아설의 유형에 대한 검토와 분류 I』에서는 이들 중 첫 두 부류에 속한 6가지 유형에 대해 살펴보았고, 본 논문에서는 세 번째 부류로 귀속되는 6가지 유형을 설명하는 데 초점을 맞춘다. 필자의 판단에 따르면 첫 번째 부류의 3가지 무아 유형은 ‘나의 것’ 등을 부정하면서 비아(非我)에 가까운 무아의 의미를 표방한다. 이러한 서술방식에 따르면 무아란 자아에 대한 존재론적 부정이 아니며 다만 경험적 현상들과의 탈동일시(disidentification)를 가리킬 뿐이다. 두 번째 부류에 속한 3가지는 사변적 견해를 비판하면서 무아에 대한 견해나 주장마저도 극복의 대상으로 간주한다. 또한 무아라는 개념에 대한 집착을 경계하면서 어떠한 형태로든 ‘나’라는 생각에 빠지지 말라는 메시지를 전한다. 한편 본 논문에서 집중적으로 다루는 세 번째 부류의 6가지 유형은 형이상학적 무아 담론의 성격을 지닌다. 이들은 객관적이고 보편적인 방식으로 무아에 대한 사변적 해설을 시도한다는 점에서 공통적이다. 이들 세 번째 부류의 무아 유형은 니까야(Nikāya)에서는 주류적 방식이 아니지만 아비달마구사론(阿毘達磨俱舍論, Abhidharmakośabhāṣya) 등 후대의 문헌들로 내려오면서 그 영향력을 확장시켜 나간 듯하다. 필자는 두 편의 논문으로 구성되는 본 연구를 통해 3가지 부류의 12가지 무아 유형의 구체적인 사례를 제시한다. 이들은 초기불교 무아설의 일반적 양상을 확인시켜주는 동시에 그 변용이 어떻게 시작되었는가를 되짚어보게 해준다.
I classify the teachings on selflessness presented in Early Buddhism into three categories. In the preceding paper, I examined the six types belonging to the first two categories, and in this paper, I focus on the six types that fall into the third category. The types of the first category advocate for a meaning of selflessness that is close to the meaning ‘it's not mine (非我).’ These types are not ontological negatives to the self, but only point to disidentification with empirical phenomena. The three types belonging to the second category criticize speculative views and even regard views or claims about selflessness as objects of overcoming. These types convey a message of not falling into the idea of ‘me’ in any form, while remaining wary of obsession with the concept of selflessness. In contrast, the six types of the third category, which are intensively dealt with in this paper, correspond to the starting point of the metaphysical selflessness discourse. These types attempt a speculative interpretation of selflessness in an objective and universal way. These six types of selflessness were heterogeneous at the time of Early Buddhism, but gradually expanded their influence as they were transmitted to later literary traditions after Early Buddhism. This paper provides sufficient examples to remind us of the general aspects and transformation process of the theory of selflessness in Early Buddhism.
