일본에서 초창기의 인도철학은 불교학 내지 불교철학의 이름으로 강좌가 개설되고 진행된 것으로, 이렇게 불교학으로서 인도철학의 전개에 절대적인 역할을 한 사람이 바로 하라 탄잔이었다. 최초로 불교강좌를 담당한 이래 인도철학이란 이름으로서 학문적 지속이 이루어진 것에는 탄잔의 불교에 대한 열정이 있어 가능했다고 생각된다. 그는 조동종의 승려로서 메이지 유신의 폐불훼석의 시련 속에서도 불교를 위한 열정을 불태우고, 도쿄대학에 최초로 불교학 강사가 된 뒤에도 불교학과 인도철학의 정착을 위해 많은 노력을 기울였다. 그는 도쿄대학에서 거의 생애의 마지막까지 강의를 담당하고, 대학의 강의를 그만둔 뒤에도 조동종의 승려로서 그 역할을 다하였다. 그와 같은 탄잔의 불교에 대한 정열과 열정이 있었기에 일본 근대 폐불훼석의 불교탄압 분위기 속에서도 불교가 새롭게 인식되어 서양의 종교와 우열을 논할 수 있는 수준으로 불교의 위상이 높아졌다고 생각된다. 이렇게 탄잔에 의해 정착된 인도철학은 이후 불교학의 색채를 벗어나 독자적인 인도철학의 전개로 이어져 간다. 이러한 독자적인 인도철학의 전개로서는 1906년 다카쿠스에 의한 인도철학종교사 강좌의 개설이 꼽혀지며, 이 강좌의 개설이 실제 일본에서 본격적인 의미의 인도철학의 출범이라고 간주되는 것이다.
Notwithstanding the hard times of Buddhism in early modern Japan, the establishment of the study of Buddhism was made as the name of Indian Philosophy at Tokyo University in 1889. The person who had an important role of formation and progression of Indian Philosophy in early times was Tanzan Hara, a monk of Soto-sect of Japanese Buddhism. He was the first lecturer of the course of Buddhism and a person that chose and used the name of Indian Philosophy firstly instead of the name of Buddhist philosophy. According to the his works, he took a serious view of the philosophy of Buddhism than the belief of Buddhism. Because of the importance of the viewpoint of philosophy, Tanzan Hara used the name of Indian Philosophy and since then, the name of Indian Philosophy was used for a long time in Japan. In early times, the Indian philosophy was one of the lectures of Departement of Philosophy in Tokyo University. Going through many changes with relation to Indian Philosophy, the departement of Indian Philosophy was estabilished independently in cooperation with the other contributors, Zenjiro Yasuda and Shaku Soen etc.. Generally speaking, the beginning of Indian Philosophy in real meaning was made by Zunjiro Takakusu on the formation of the lecture of the history of Philosophy and Religion in India at 1906. During the times of Meiji Restoration, the formation of the Indian philosophy was considered as a symbol of the restoration of Buddhism.
