일반적으로 인도불교의 언어관은 언어와 대상과의 관계에서 실재론적 입장을 가지는 미맘사학파나 니야야・와이세키카 학파 등의 인도철학과는 달리 유명론적인 입장을 취한다. 이러한 불교의 언어관은 『반야경』의 공관에 따라 용수의 이제설이나 초기유가행파의 진리관에 잘 반영되어 있다. 요컨대 『반야경』의 공관에 입각한 비실재적 언어관이나 명칭과 사물의 관계에 대한 그 반성적 통찰은 학파적인 입장에 따라 용수의 이제설이나 초기유가행파의 유식적인 이제, 즉 불가언성을 본질로 하는 공성의 이해방식에 대한 기술 등에서 확인된다. 따라서 이 논문은 초기유식사상사에서 『반야경』의 비실재적인 언어관을 계승하여 허망분별을 그 사상적 기반으로 새롭게 전개된 유식의 사상구조에 주목하여, 교리적으로 언어의 문제가 내재화되는 변천과정이나 그 양상을 사상사적으로 재검토한 것이다.
In a general sense, Indian Buddhism takes a nominalist view concerning the object-language relationship, unlike the other schools of Indian philosophy such as Mīmāmsā, Niyāya, and Vaiśeșika, which have a realist position thereof. Such a view of Indian Buddhism is well reflected in the theory of truths of the early Yogācāra school and Nāgārjuna’s two truths doctrine [二諦說], both of which are again based on the doctrine of emptiness (śūnya) of the Prajñāparamitā-sūtras. In short, a non-realist view of language based on the śūnyatā theory or a reflective insight into the relationship between names and objects is found in the two truths doctrines of Nāgārjuna and the early Yogācāra school. And such a view is discernable in their descriptions of understanding the nature of emptiness, which has inexpressibility as its essence. This paper thus focuses on the theoretical structure of Yogācāra thought which is based on the concept of “abhūtaparikalpa” appearing in the Madhyāntavibhāga, which critically accepts a non-realist view of language of the Prajñāparamitā-sūtras.
