마음챙김 명상의 의미체계가 갖는 적응주의에 대한 비판과 대안 모색 - 스티븐 하이네의 화이트칼라 선(禪)을 중심으로=An Alternative Perspective Against Adaptationism in the Meaning System of Mindfulness Meditation: With Reference to the White Collar Zen of Steven Heine

미국의 대표적 중국철학 연구자의 한 사람인 하버드대학교의 마이클 푸엣 교수는 미국에서 마음챙김(mindfulness) 명상의 유행을 중심으로 불교가 왜곡되어 확산되고 있는 것에 대하여 심각한 비판을 제기한다. 마이클 푸엣은 오늘날 미국에서 유행하는 마음챙김 명상이 그 의미체계에서 인간적 관계를 고무시키는 것이 아니라 오히려 인간을 소외시키면서 사람들로 하여금 무자비한 신자유주의 이념 아래에서 끊임없는 경쟁 속에 더 나은 직업과 더 많은 돈을 통하여 사적이고 개별적인 향상을 도모하도록 하는 경향이 있다고 평가절하하고 있는 것이다. 불교의 마음챙김 명상에 대한 마이클 푸엣의 평가절하는 정당하고 올바른 것으로 인정될 수밖에 없는 것인가? 미국에서 마음챙김 명상의 기업화 내지 산업화는 마음챙김 명상이 신자유주의 사조를 극단적으로 추종하는 가운데 사람들 사이의 호혜적인 따스하고 인간적인 관계로부터 사람들을 소외시키는 도구로서 악용될 수 있다는 우려를 정당화하는가? 푸엣에 의하면 미국에서 마음챙김 명상은 “감정을 관찰하고 받아들인 뒤 내보냄으로써 일종의 개인적 평온함을 얻는” “일종의 이국적인 자기 계발 도구”가 되었고 “세상을 있는 그대로 받아들이고 그 안에서 내 위치를 인정하는 법을 배우는 사상으로” 재해석되고 있다. 이러한 재해석은 “삶에서 운명을 받아들이고, 삶은 미리 결정되어 있다는 전통적 세계관에 빠질 공산이 크다”라고 마이클 푸엣은 비판한다. 이러한 마이클 푸엣의 비판이 미국에서 유행하는 공안선에도 적용될 수 있을 것인가? 이러한 문제 인식에서 필자는 ‘화이트칼라 선(White Collar Zen)’ 운동을 주도하고 있는 스티븐 하이네(Steven Heine)의 공안선(公案禪) 사상을 검토하고자 한다. 그리하여 스티븐 하이네의 공안선 사상은 그 의미체계에 있어서 그 자신의 공안(公案)에 대한 중국과 일본에서의 역사적이고 사상적이며 문화적인 심층적 연구를 기반으로 하면서 “개인적 평온함”에 탐닉하는 것이 아니라 진취적이고 공동체의 향상을 지향하는 적극적인 사회적 가치를 지니는 것으로 인정될 수 있는지를 확인하고자 한다. 이러한 스티븐 하이네의 연구와 공안선 운동은 간화선의 지구촌적 발전에도 적극적으로 시사하는 바가 클 수 있다.
This study aims to appraise an alternative perspective against adaptationism in the meaning system of mindfulness meditation with reference to the white collar zen proposed by Steven Heine, an American scholar of Zen Buddhism. Michael Puett, one of the most famous professors at Harvard University for his popular and accessible lectures and writings, recently published a book titled “The Path,” where he proposes his own unique understanding of Confucianism and Daoism as appropriate remedies for modern American problems, including social discrimination and alienation. He emphasizes the importance of East Asian values based on the teachings of Confucius and Laozi, focusing on immediate change in our lives in the dimension of social relations. He also he expresses his own criticism of Buddhism, focusing on the lack of social concern, which may make some readers interested in Buddhism uncomfortable. His criticism of Buddhism should not be ignored because it reflects the opinions circulating among American intellectuals. Some scholars of Buddhism in America might even agree with him on some points. For example, Robert H. Sharf, a professor of Buddhism at the University of California, Berkeley, warns of the danger of the popularity of Buddhist mindfulness practice in contemporary America. David Loy, an actual practitioner of Buddhist mindfulness practice in America, also cautions about the distortion of Buddhist mindfulness practice in America at present, especially the practice that tends to be subservient to the spread of the neo-liberalist spirit. Although Michael Puett's criticism of Buddhism might be denounced as a presumptuous behavior transcending his own boundary of research, we might need to consider it carefully to objectively comprehend the present situation of American Buddhism and seek alternative options available in consideration of the dominant problems facing American and global society. Fortunately, Steven Heine's understanding and appropriation of Seon Buddhism is noteworthy in his efforts to encounter the vividness of the Seon tradition and apply it to improve the lives of Americans. His prolific writings and achievements in American academia and entrepreneurial groups are also noteworthy because they may be regarded as proving his own assertions about Gongan Seon through his life and activities.
