摘要
종교로서의 불교에 있어 신앙의 핵심을 이루고 있는 것은 무엇보다 “佛”에관한 문제라 본다. 진리의 오득자인 석존의 위대한 인격에 대한 흠모와존숭으로부터 시작된 원시불교의 불타관은, 부파불교를 지나 대승불교에이르면서 심오하고 다양한 불타관으로 발전한다. 즉 미래불로서의 미륵불은 물론, 아촉불이나 아미타불과 같은 현재타방불 등 다불사상이 대두되고, 급기야 그들 시방삼세제불을 통일하는 구원석가불사상이 등장한다. 나아가 영원무한한 보편불로서의 시방편만불사상이 전개되고, 대승 중기에이르러서는 내재불사상이 강조된다. 더욱이 대승 후기에 이르러서는 우주법신 대일여래사상으로 발전된다. 한편 이러한 제불타의 본질과 현상에대한 철학적 논구로서의 불신론이 제기되어, 원시불교 내지 부파불교에서는 소박한 법․생이 거론되고, 대승 초기에는 용수에 의하여 진공․묘유의양면을 강조한 심화된 2 신불설이 전개된다. 그 뒤 보살사상과 전의사상등을 배경으로 하여 3신불설로 발전되는 바, 법신의 영원성과 색신의 구체성을 동시에 조화․융통시킬 수 있는 제3 신이 모색됨으로써, 자성신․ ․수용신․변화신, 또는 법신․보신․응신 등의 3 신불설이 확립된다. 그런데 이상과 같은 제유형의 불타관 내지 불신론의 분화 발전에는, 각각그에 상응하는 역사적․사회적․문화적 배경의 차이에서 유래된 것임은물론, 또 한편으로 그것은 인간의 종교적 심리 내지 진리인식의 다양성과그 단계성을 반영한 것이라고도 볼 수 있다. 이러한 의미에서 본고에서는이들 제불타관 내지 불신관에 드러나는 제반의 신앙적 의미요소들을 그특징에 따라 정리하여 보고, 나아가 그것들을 비판적으로 종합 지양하여봄으로써, 이상적 불교 신앙관 내지 종교 신앙의 방향 모색에 일조를 얻을수 있지 않을까 한다.
Usually it is said that the innermost core of Buddhist faith is nothing but the issues about Buddha. The naive view on Buddha of the primitive Buddhism, based on the respect of Śākamuni as the realizer of truth, has been deepened and developed into various views through Abhidharma Buddhism and Mahāyāna Buddhism. In the history of Buddhism, we can find poly-Buddhas of Maitreya as a future Buddha, and Amita as a pure-land Buddha, and then we are able to meet Everlasting Śākamuni Buddha unifying all those poly-Buddhas. Furthermore, the thought of Omnipresent-Universal Buddha as an eternal and limitless universal Buddha was proposed, and the inner Buddha like as Tathāgathagarbha or Buddha-nature was emphasized in the middle age of Mahāyāna Buddhism. And then, in the last period of Mahāyāna, the thought of Mahāvairocana Buddha was developed. On the other hand, all the view points of Buddhas had been analysed by Buddh-kāya theories for the philosophical research about essence and phenomena of those Buddhas. In the period of primitive Buddhism, the simple two-bodies theory of Dharma-kāya and Nirmāṇa-kāya has been suggested. And in the early period of Mahāyāna, it is deepened by Nāgārjuna, who emphasized on the both sides of true voidness and marvellous existence. After all it has been developed to three-bodies theory which was based on the thought of Boddhisattva or the theory of 'transmutation of the support.' However it has been established by the idea of third body, Saṃbhoga-kāya, which is arle to harmonize the eternity of Dharma-kāya with the concreteness of Nirmāṇa-kāya. The development of all the view points on Buddha and Buddha-kāya mentioned above, of course, is originated from cultural, social and historical differences. And to some degree, it can be attributed to the diversity and stages of human being's religious psychology or recognition about Ultimate Reality. In this respect, this paper organized the various religious meanings that appeared in these views on Buddha, according to their characteristics. And then by unifying and sublating those various religious meanings and characteristics critically, we would like to get an ideal direction for the faith of Buddhism.
