원효는 『기신론』 연구로, 종밀은 『원각경』 연구로 일대를 풍미하였다. 이 두 독특한 사상가를 비교하는 것은 쉽지 않다. 그런데, 종밀이 원효에게 사상적 영향을 받았다. 이 점에 주목하여 종밀이 원효로부터 받은 영향의 맥락을 밝힘으로써 두 사상가의 사유를 대비적으로 분석하고, 사상의 동이를 밝히는 1차작업이 본 고의 목적이다. 본고에서는 종밀의 저술에서 원효의 『기신론소』와 『금강삼매경론』을 주로 인용하는 것을 확인하여 두 사상가의 사유를 비교검토하고자 하였다. 검토결과 종밀은 원효의 『기신론소』에서 일심과 신해개념을 중시하여 법장과도 다른 사유를 보였다. 특히 신해개념은 종밀의 중요시하는 영지, 영심 개념과도 상통하며, 종밀이 선적인 경향성이 이 개념을 수용하게 하였다. 한편, 종밀은 4종의 『원각경』 주석서에서 『삼매경론』을 인용하는데, 그 인용 내용은 ① 삼매의 정의, ② 말세중생을 위한 일미설, ③ 대중교화로 분류된다. 인용처는 삼매의 정의를 빼고는 『금강삼매경』 「무상법품」의 내용이다. 원효는 『금강삼매경』이 상법 중생들을 위한 교설이라고 보는데, 종밀은 이를 수용하며, 나아가 『원각경』 설과 동일성을 주장하기 위해 구체적 논리를 원효로부터 빌려온다. 종밀과 원효 사이에는 종밀이 원효를 인용하면서 빚어지는 약간의 사상적 상위가 없지는 않지만, 전체적으로 종밀에게 원효는 『대승기신론』의 사상을 근간으로 삼아 자신의 원각사상을 넓혀가게 하는 방향성을 제공해준 사상가라고 평가할 수 있다.
Wonhyo is famous for a study of Dasheng qixin lun (大乘起信論) and Zongmi (宗密) is famous for the study of Yuanjue jing. These two masters overwhelm a generation ideologically. It is not easy to compare these two unique masters. First, I pay attention to Zongmi that was influenced by Wonhyo. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the ideas of two thinkers in contrast to Zongmi’s quotation of Wonhyo’s writings in his writings and to analyze the differences and similarities of their ideas. The main writings to be analyzed in this paper are Yuanjuejingdashu of Zongmi and its commentary and kishinronso, kumgangsammaekyongron of Wonhyo. As a result, Zongmi showed a different view from Fazang by emphasizing the concept of one mind and mysterious comprehension(神解) in wonhyo’s kishinronso. In particular, the concept of mysterious comprehension is also connected with the concept of mystic wisdom(靈知,) and mystic mind(靈心), which Zoungmi emphasizes. On the other hand, Zongmi cites sammaekyongron in four Yuanjuejing commentary, which are categorized as ① the definition of samadhi, ② the theory of one taste for ordinary people in the latter age and ③ the popularization. The quote is the contents of jingangsameijing wuxiangfapin(『金剛三昧經』 「無相法品」) except for the definition of samadhi. Even though Zongmi quotes Wonhyo, there is little difference between the two masters. But overall, Wonhyo influenced Zongmi through his Dasheng qixin lun idea, and Zongmi widened his perfect enlightenment idea through Wonhyo.
