AbstractEach volume contains a hundred or so pages of text explaining the numerous plates which accompany the volumes in a separate atlas. As a whole, the five volumes attempt to study the history of Buddhist culture during the Sui and T'ang dynasties by means of analysis of the archaeological remains. Based on a series of seven expeditions to China during the first two decades of the Twentieth century, the work seems to emphasize the significance of rock caves and the religious life centering around them. In addition, however, the authors have given a fairly comprehensive account of stupas and monasteries, which were of great importance. The basic arrangement of the volumes is chronological.
